SINGAPORE - A grandmother, who was killed when her husband accidentally stepped on the car accelerator while reversing, was trying to protect her grandson from getting hit, Shin Min Daily has reported.
The boy, 2, and his grandmother, who is in her 70s, were hit by the car and flung into a neighbour's wall 5m away.
According to the Chinese daily, the driver and his wife are both Italians who had come to Singapore to visit their son and his family.
The accident happened when the elderly man was reversing the car into his son's Chancery Hill home.
Shin Min reported that his wife, two grandchildren and their maid had alighted from the car first because the gate had failed to open up automatically. Once they got out of the car, the children ran about excitedly.
The 2-year-old boy then cycled into the path of the reversing car, and his grandmother called out to her husband to caution him. However, her shouts alarmed the elderly man and in his panic, he stepped on the accelerator by mistake.
Although she was taken to Tan Tock Seng hospital, the grandmother succumbed to her injuries and died. The boy survived but his leg was severed in the accident.
After the accident occurred, a female doctor who was in the vicinity rushed over and picked up the boy's severed limb, immediately icing it in hopes that it can be re-attached by doctors later.
Unfortunately, the boy's leg could not be re-attached and he remained in the intensive care unit on August 6.

What a tragic piece of news. As the media focused on the fault of the driver and the details of the accident, who can empathize with him, who single-handedly caused the death of his spouse and permanent disability to his grandson, and the guilt and burden he will carry with him for the rest of his life? Let's not be too harsh and too quick to judge. He has been punished enough...
Praying for the toddler...
God have mercy...
